Welcome to "The Motor Cycle". This site is dedicated to the glory days of British motorcycling. From the halcyon days of the 1920s and 1930s through to eventual demise of the British motor cycle industry in the 1960s and '70s.
Famous marques, such as Brough Superior, B.S.A, Douglas, Excelsior, Francis-Barnett, Humber, James, Matchless, Morgan, Norton, Phelon & Moore, Royal Enfield, Rudge, Scott, Sunbeam, Triumph, Velocette, and Vincent H.R.D.
Read about the exploits of those early pioneers, manufacturers and riders of a wonderful plethora of machines, as they progressed from simple powered bicycles to the wondrous machines that evolved.
Absorb the stories and news items from the 1930s through the war years of the 1940s and onto the great boom times after the war. Then to the 1960s and changing styles and manufacturing practices and the competition from the Far East.
"The Motor Cycle" magazine was founded in 1903 and was published by lliffe and Sons Ltd, every Thursday. It became known as "The Blue 'un" due to the colour of the cover, but as can be seen in the following pages the cover changed considerably over the years from beige and brown to blue to red and often multi colour.
